The CSFS Primary Care Program is an interdisciplinary team of Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, Community Health Nurses, Mental Health Clinicians, Rehabilitation Specialists, Care Aides and Medical Office Assistants. The program provides access to an innovative model of healthcare service delivery (Primary care, public health and home and community care) to the 11 First Nation Communities we serve. The program has been lauded for its innovation in providing care through the use of in person and technology to rural and remote First Nations Communities and hopes to build on its philosophy of holistic approaches to health by adding an Occupational Therapist to the team.

Purpose of the Position

Working within the Primary care team, the Occupational Therapist will manage a caseload of clients providing assessment, consultation and programing for patients and caregivers. The OT will be a key part of the patient’s circle of care and will work within a full scope of practice. The OT will work with clients across the lifespan (pediatric to geriatric) and will provide care in the clinical setting as well as in the communities providing home assessments and interventions within patient’s homes.

This position will work with the CSFS interdisciplinary teams to provide occupational therapy assessment and treatment. The occupational therapy management of clients includes identification of occupational performance issues, completion of assessments, setting treatment goals and objectives, providing intervention, establishing outcomes and follow-up plans in consultation with client, family and other CSFS team members.

The Occupational Therapist is responsible for providing consultation through direct care and telehealth to enhance, maintain, improve, and restore a patient’s ability to participate in meaningful self-care, leisure, and productive activities.


The Occupational Therapist provides appropriate & effective occupational therapy clinical management for clients by prioritizing, assessing, treating, re-evaluating, documenting & teaching techniques aimed at improving mobility, relieving pain & restoring physical and mental functioning. Specifically, duties will include:

Practices in accordance with the standards of professional practice and code of ethics as outlined by the College of Occupation Therapists of British Columbia (COTBC) as well as within a client centered care model.
Educates and counsels family members and caregivers regarding the impact of disability, injury or disease on the individual and their role in the treatment and recovery process.
Evaluates factors that impact activities of daily living (ADLs), instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs), leisure and social participation. Considers client factors including body function & body structure, habits and behaviour patterns, cultural and spiritual context as well as communication skills.
Empowers and supports patients to improve their ability to perform tasks in their daily living and working environments.
Participates in CSFS ICT team meetings and collaborates with other health care professionals and community resources to promote comprehensive and coordinated care.
Advocates on behalf of clients for service, equipment, navigation and funding including provincial services, First Nations Health Benefits etc.
Provides treatment plans that will enable patients to reach their full functional and work integration potential, in collaboration with all stakeholders (Patient, Primary Care Team members, Mental Health workers, etc.).
Facilitates client’s implementation of OT recommendations.
Conducts developmental screening and assessments for infants and children such as motor and sensory-motor delays.
Evaluates cognitive and/or perceptual abilities.
Conducts clinical observations of gross and fine motor, visual-perceptual-motor, and in hand manipulation.
Conducts mobility assessment and Assistive Device Program assessments.
Conducts ergonomic assessments.
Maintains a complete clinical record as per college guidelines and Carrier Sekani Family Services policies and procedures.
Maintains therapy equipment in good working order. Cleans equipment & makes recommendations for equipment purchase to enhance delivery of best practice therapy.
Liaises with referring agencies & other service providers responsible for providing ongoing care to ensure continuity of treatment programs.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Educational Requirements

Master’s Degree (or equivalent) in Occupational Therapy or Rehabilitation Medicine.
Registration in good standing with the College of Occupational Therapists of BC.
An equivalent combination of education, training, or experience may be considered
Working/Special Conditions

Lifting of office boxes and supplies may be required
Communication with a wide variety of stakeholders is required
May be required to work evenings (due to travel)
Exposure to regular travel to remote locations
May be required to use own vehicle
