Carrier Sekani Family Services

Carrier Sekani Family Services (CSFS) is looking for a Family Empowerment Worker. This role is responsible for providing supervised visitation for children-in-care with family members. The incumbent will provide transportation to and from visits for children and teach life skills to parents and other family members who access the Family Empowerment Program.


1.Teaches a variety of home management life skills:

Teaches life skills to the parents and other family members who access services from the Family Empowerment program. These include; behavior modification methods, role modeling, open discussions, and role-playing.
Provides information on home management skills, including but not limited to:
Information on nutritional meal planning.
Child safety
Basic health and personal hygiene
First Aid
Housekeeping strategies and standards
Skills to effectively manage time
2. Provides information on parenting skills, including but not limited to:

How to set limits and boundaries
Effective ways of disciplining
Natural and logical consequences
Stages of child development and age appropriate behaviors
3. Provides information on personal functioning:

Self esteem
Assertiveness training
Self-advocacy skills
Communication skills
Stress management
Coping skills
Anger management
4. Provides supervised access visits for clients:

Schedule all access visits between children and their families with foster families and biological families as directed by the FPMCH Team Leader.
Provide services to families referred by the Ministry of Children and Family Development, Carrier Sekani Family Services and any other delegated agency requesting services as detailed on individual contracts and Integrated Case Management (ICM) planning meetings.
Facilitate goal related supervised access to families who have children in the care of the Director.
Notifying FPMCH Team Leader if individual and/ or family is not available for a scheduled visit and the appointment is missed.
Applies required safety procedures when transporting clients
5. Adhere to standards for follow-up meetings:

Organize and conduct regular meetings with MCFD social workers and parents to review goal work and/or services plans.
Organize and conduct an ICM within two weeks of opening a supported visit file with CSFS, and every three months thereafter.
6. Adhere to standards of confidentiality:

Handle confidential information regarding children and families, in strict confidence.
7. Comply with all relevant standards for documentation and reporting:

Maintain complete, accurate and concise reports of supervised access: Reporting details observed with respect to the family dynamics.
Provide a monthly written report outlining each family contact/visit to indicate services received, skills taught and progress on identified goals.
Maintain detailed, clear, concise reports of daily activities and submit activity reports to the Family Support Manager in accordance with CSFS Standards.
As per the Child, Family and Community Service Act, it is the law that all incidents of child abuse and/or neglect are reported to the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD). The Family Empowerment worker will report any disclosure or threat of child abuse immediately to the Ministry of Children and Family Development and FPMCH Team Leader. This includes any situation which places a child ‘at risk’ or in danger.
Qualifications and Educational Requirements

Grade 12 Diploma or equivalent
Social Services diploma or certificate preferred
Two years’ experience in a related area of practice
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

First Nations Culture and traditions (specifically Carrier and Sekani)
Experience working in an office setting, serving clients, and answering routine inquiries
Ability to work independently and within a team setting
Computer skills using Microsoft Office suite (MS Word, Excel); able to prepare spreadsheets and operate word processing programs and Adobe Acrobat
Excellent oral and written communication skills to compose business correspondence
Detail-oriented with ability to maintain a high level of accuracy in preparing, entering, and verifying information
Maintain confidentiality concerning employee files
Ability to prioritize, manage time, and organize;
Ability to multi-task and maintain focus despite interruptions
Familiarity with office equipment including copiers, scanners, and printers
Working/Special Conditions

Located in an open office area, faced with regular interruptions and a number of deadlines
Some computer work and typing required
Lifting up to 50 pounds
May be required to work evenings and weekends
Initial and on-going employment is subject to submission of a clear Criminal Record check. Criminal Record Check must be conducted every three years.
Must possess a valid driver’s license with access to a safe and reliable vehicle insured for business use
Must take child restraint training for approved child seats
Must attend non-violent crisis intervention training
Emergency First Aid required
